When a Community Stays Silent, the Consequences Can Reach Us All
We learn from history. When we consider why wrongdoing is repeated, we must examine not only the responsibility of those directly involved, but also how those around them responded.
When allegations of misconduct arise within an organization and substantial supporting evidence is presented, its leaders and members should not suppress those concerns or dismiss them as someone else’s problem. They should establish the facts, seek explanations and correct any wrongdoing that is uncovered.
Brushing problems aside for the sake of keeping the peace does not make a community better. While people remain silent to avoid conflict, the issues that need examination and resolution remain.
How can a community maintain trust if it ignores its internal problems while presenting only a positive image to the outside world? I believe a community’s integrity is demonstrated through its willingness to confront and resolve problems, rather than through reassuring words alone.
When an individual spends personal time and money raising concerns about an organization, we should ask ourselves whether we are treating the matter as that person’s struggle alone. In particular, if the organization uses community funds to respond, the reasons for its decisions, the costs and the results are matters of importance to all community members.
This does not mean accepting anyone’s claims unquestioningly or automatically taking sides. It means examining the evidence, listening to the explanations of those involved and applying the same standards to everyone. It means continuing to seek answers to questions that remain unresolved.
If we turn away from unfairness experienced by others today, we may encounter the same indifference when something similar happens to us. We may then find ourselves asking, “Why does no one in this community care?”
What kind of community do we want?
I hope we can be a community that examines the facts together and corrects wrongdoing, rather than leaving the person who raised the concerns to bear the burden alone.
That change begins with the attention and participation of each of us.
